In February of 2007, Wichita County High School was awarded the Governor's Achievement Award. To earn the award, schools' test scores must be among the top 5 percent in Kansas, and they must meet the following criteria:

  • Achieve the Standard of Excellence in both reading and math for the spring 2006 Kansas State Assessments. This award goes to high schools where at least 15 percent of students score at the "exemplary" level, the highest possible score, and where no more than 15 percent of students are on "academic warning", the lowest score. At WCHS, 45.4 percent of students scored "exemplary" in reading and 27.5 percent in math.

  • Make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in reading and math for 2006. As part of the federal No Child Left Behind Act, schools must make AYP by meeting incrementally increasing targets for the percentage of students who score "meets standard" or higher on the assessments. At WCHS, 93.8 percent of students reached at least "meets standard" in reading, and 72.2 percent in math.

  • Show a strong graduation rate. WCHS's rate in 2006 was 95.1 percent.
